Grammar April 30, 2008

I was in English class today, and we’re studying grammar. More specifically, pronoun/antecedent agreement, and subject/verb agreement (WOW. Fragment right there). Sounds pretty easy, but of course, I’m having a bit of trouble. And I’m thinking to myself, “Why do we need this?” I mean, it’s good to a certain extent, so everybody’s not going around saying, ‘I is good’ or whatever. Honestly, I can’t think of very many people who are going to start yelling at me for saying “Everyone should mind their own business”, rather than, “Everyone should mind his or her own business”. (Mind you, those may be grammatically incorrect. I told you, I’m not that good at this.) And plus, if you’re talking, nobody will know (or care about) the difference. On an essay, it’s not like the teacher doesn’t understand what you’re saying if you have fragments or run-ons or whatever! These rules are restricting, and quite frankly, a PAIN!
Well, there goes my rant on grammar… People are probably very opinionated the other way for this one, but in my opinion, it’s a pain. It sound weird, but if you think about it… I don’t know. This is purely speculation.
