A Sport is a Sport is a Sport. June 6, 2008

This post is for a certain “kirbycurse” (see Blog Review: videotapegames). PEP FLAGS, DRILL TEAM, DANCE, ETC ETC ARE SPORTS.
Okay. You’re argument was that you don’t earn your scores, someone gives them to you. The only thing is: you earn those scores! Judges for dance competitions etc. wouldn’t score you super high if you sucked, and vice versa. Honestly, although not directly earning a ‘score’, for example, shooting a soccer ball into the goal, you are indirectly earning your points through the judges professional discretion. If that argument stands, skiing is no longer a sport, nor is diving, gymnastics, figure skating… The list goes on and on.
Kirbycurse, provide a counterargument, or I assume victory! Others, agree with me or kirbycurse?
P.S. – A certain bandgeek, sorry to steal your idea. I’m not trying to do so, but your thinking galvanized this argument to mind, and it was never quite settled. Sorry… you can still say why you think marching band is a sport, etc. This is merely for argumentative purposes, not speculative. Sorry again.
Omg, CAM I ACTUALLY AGREE WITH YOU FOR ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Yayz!!!! Kirbycurse, you should know that I do Dance, AND IT IS A SPORT. When I dance, my dance teacher in school grades me based on my technique. She gives me a score. And in competitions, the judges give a score based on how well the performance was. And if you have the nerve to say Dance isn’t a sport, you shall have the pleasure of having your face get aquainted with my fist. (You know, as in what they do in Karate. ANOTHER SPORT.) Got it? :P
Thing is, you don’t KNOW kirbycurse to do that. Also, I’m not being violent. I’m being diplomatic.
Kirbycurse, shall we simply agree to disagree?
Yeesh, Cam. That’s all I have to say…
It’s okay. I already wrote my post about it before I read this.
Oh and pep flags and drill team are the same thing…
I know.. but whatever.
I disagree! By your reasoning, mathgeek, your dance teacher grades you. Gives you a score. And that goes to show, that, BY THAT LOGIC, school is a sport. You get graded! You get a score! karate is a combat art, by the way. Not technically a sport, but it still has competitions. Diving, gymnastics, and figure skating are competitions, while skiing is a recreational activity, with competitions. And, marching band IS NOT a sport. And by earn, I mean, not awarded for work, but actually score points. Baseball by getting around the bases, soccer for putting the ball in the goal, basketball by making a basket, curling for getting it on a target…
Kirbycurse, who do you think you are??? Dance IS a sport!!!!! And I don’t JUST do Dance in school. I DO DANCE OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL, TOO. I take classes, and perform in competitions/shows. And actually, yes, you do earn points in Dance. The judges SCORE you based on how well you do. And dude, Karate is a sport, too. I’m a blackbelt. I would know. So is Diving, Gymnastics, Figure Skating, Skiing, AND MARCHING BAND!!!!!
Okay? Now, I don’t do Marching Band, but dude, you sure are gonna get flamed for saying it isn’t a sport. Because in high school (you know, the school you’ll be going to next year) it is considered a VARISTY SPORT. And bandgeek, wherever she is, will soon see your post and comment back. Dude, you’re gonna wish you never opened your mouth to begin with. Or for that matter, typed your post. And she also has an entire entry in her blog about how it’s a sport. You may wanna read it in your spare time. Here’s the link:
http://bandgeek602.wordpress.com/2008/06/07/marching-band/#comments
Anyways, Diving is a sport (it’s considered Varsity in high school), Gymnastics is a sport (I should know, I did it for 7 years… and you SCORE points, once again), same with Figure Skating (you SCORE points). Hey, I shouldn’t even have to explain this to you. Do you bother watching the Olympics? Because everything you listed here are SPORTS that people compete in, in the Olympics.
So just because you’re a narrow-minded idiot who thinks the only sports in this world are baseball, soccer, basketball, and football, it doesn’t mean you’re right. Because everyone else on this planet is going to disagree with you. Hell, just look it up on Google if you don’t believe me. Just type in ‘Is ____ a sport’ and the answer will come up as: YES Got it?
Mathgeek, calm down.
Kirbycurse: in a more civilized diplomatic response, I say: no, school is not a sport. Keep in mind, a sport has to be COMPETITIVE and reqiure PHYSICAL EXERTION. School has one, and usually not even that. Mathgeek’s logic was simply a response to your argument (don’t earn points, people give them to you). My point was an example, not the definition of a sport.
Okay Kirbycurse, you are a moron. I don’t know who you thnk you are really. Just because your score is based on people’s opinions doesn’t mean you don’t earn them. We worked SO HARD for our 1st place in our competition for band. And just so you know, you DO earn the scores by getting points. Each category is based a whole point system. And for you comment that school would be a sport, THAT IS SO NOT TRUE! Just because you can take something as a class in school doesn’t mean you can’t do it outside of school too. There are millions of professional dancers and all those other sports that you said don’t count, just like there are professional football players. And for what you said about curling and getting it on the target, you don’t necessarily need to get it on. You just need to be the closest. So technically, that goes against your theory of not directly earning your score. But I really want to hear your reasoning behind the marching band thing. You should try being in it next year. You probably couldn’t handle it.
OOH. A challenge.
OMG, WAY TO GO BANDGEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!! *highfive* :D Niiice!!!!
Kirbycurse: Told ya you’d get flamed. XD
Cam: I am very calm, thank you very much. :)
And why couldn’t I handle it? 1. That’s not a flame. 2. By mathgeek’s logic, school is considered a sport. Personally, I think that logic is bull s***, but hey, it’s not mine. in soccer, the referee (I know this because I am taking a USSF course) simply records the game, intervening when necessary. The ref can’t give goals to a team, they have to be between the goalposts, and over the goal line, and legally propelled (ie no hand of god.). If it meets those requirements, it’s a goal and the ref records it. Again, dance is a competition. It’s strenuous, but you are awarded points, not earning them. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WORK FOR THEM. However, earning is “1 a: to receive as return for effort and especially for work done.” Merriam-Webster definition. You do do work, but you receive points. I understand that you work really hard, but in reality, it’s just a competition. By the way, you might want to look up varsity. It’s the principle representative of a school. So marching band is considered varsity BECAUSE THERE AREN’T MULTIPLE. Same with diving. I googled “is dance a sport”, mathgeek. First thing.
Is Dance a Sport? – Sports and Wellness
- 10:00pm
What is dance, exactly? Is dance a sport? Dance has all the elements of a … “Dance is not a sport, it is an art,” opines sophomore dance major Andrea …
By the way, I think I’m me. And I know I’m right. So if you ACTUALLY READ what I said, instead of just yelling about certain words you glance at, you’ll know too. And I don’t think those four are the only four. What about track? And cross-country? And swimming? And cricket? And hockey? And rugby? And tennis? And water polo? And normal polo? AND A HECK OF A LOT MORE. I take offense at your opinion of me. I happen not to be narrow-minded, I happen to see the truth. Which you apparently can’t comprehend.
“1. That’s not a flame.” Oh, shut up. That’s the best way I could think of to say it, because if I said the thing that was really on my mind at that time, Cam would’ve deleted it because of the high level of profanity that your moronic brain can’t handle. And if you think I cannot comprehend what you are saying, then you have a retarded opinion of me. And don’t try and insult me. Hell no. I don’t take shit from anyone, especially when you’re the one who started it. And dude, when you googled it, you only looked at the top search. Ever heard of a thing called scroll down and click on other stuff to read them too? Don’t just take the first thing you see, even if it is in your favor.
And yes, Dance is ALSO considered an art in which the dancer and the performance is the product. But Dance is strenuous, as well. Do you have any idea how many times I’ve gotten injured, pulled a muscle, etc., just from dancing? This is why Dance is a sport. Here is the definition of sport from the online American Heritage Dictionary “An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.” You work hard, and EARN the points by performing. No, the judges don’t just award you with points based on if they think you’re pretty or not. You work hard, and score points that you earned based on your technique and choreography. And there are rules, as in if you are doing ballet, you can’t just break out and start krumping, you know what I’m saying?
And where are you getting the whole “By mathgeek’s logic, school is considered a sport.” thing, anyway? Maybe it’s YOU and not me who isn’t reading the comments very well. Take your own advice and read the tiny comprehendable words inbetween the all capitalized words and the punctuation, will ya? I never said anything about school being a sport.
About Marching Band, that’s all bandgeek’s area. Let her explain…
Anyways, I still think you’re a narrow-minded idiot who won’t listen to other people’s opinions. Or in this cast, FACTS. Plus in case you can’t count (which is the direction that I am betting on) 3 people disagree with you. 3:1 <–That would be a ratio. *rolls eyes while waiting for you to comprehend this basic level of mathematics* So by saying that my “logic is bull s***”, you’re also saying bandgeek’s and Cam’s logic is bullshit for whenever we define a sport.
So get a clue. You can reply all you want, and I will retort to all of your comments. This can go on for years, if you haven’t figured it out. Either learn to accept that Dance is a sport along with being considered an art (from me, a dancer, and every other dancer on this planet) and that school isn’t, no matter how many times you twist around my words (from me, Cam, and bankgeek) or get lost.
Ooops. Typo. I meant ‘case’ instead of ‘cast’. Lol! Hope that wasn’t too confusing for you, kirbycurse.
Okay, kirbycuse, the freaky thing is:i agree with most of it, and that’s why it IS a sport in my mind!!
“The ref can’t give goals to a team, they have to be between the goalposts, and over the goal line, and legally propelled (ie no hand of god.). If it meets those requirements, it’s a goal and the ref records it. Again, dance is a competition. It’s strenuous, but you are awarded points, not earning them. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WORK FOR THEM.”
All facts, and all true, I just think that makes dance seem like a sport. Yes, dance is a competition, but also a sport. If it is “competitive and requires strenuous physical activity” it is a sport, so that’s why I believe it is. Yes, I understand you don’t earn points.
Also, mathgeek, I’m starting to agree less and less with you. Now you’re just screaming. Listen to this:
Kirbycurse:Again, dance is a competition. It’s strenuous, but you are awarded points, not earning them
Mathgeek:Dance is ALSO considered an art in which the dancer and the performance is the product. But Dance is strenuous, as well. Do you have any idea how many times I’ve gotten injured, pulled a muscle, etc., just from dancing? This is why Dance is a sport.
DId you read what kirbycurse had written? If you had, you would’ve known that he had addressed that point already.
However, I still think dance is a sport, by reasoning above.
If you can get injured in it, that doesn’t make it a sport. Also, if I’M the narrow minded idiot, why are you not reading mine? And by the way, that level of mathematics isn’t difficult. I realize it’s a ratio. You being an idiot doesn’t make everyone else one. Your logic centers on the physical requirements to succeed at it. That’s great. But you’re looking at a slice of the picture, not the whole thing. It’s like being put in a box with just a pinpoint to see through. I know school isn’t a sport. Look at this, though.
mathgeek: “When I dance, my dance teacher in school grades me based on my technique”
Guess what? You get grades in school too. There ya go. You said it, not me. And if anyone is twisting words, it certainly isn’t me. I’ve provided counterarguments for everything. Have you? So, please, just start reading what I say, and not just seeing “not a sport” and going from that. It definitely shows your stupidity.
Kirbycurse, you realize that you’re the ONLY person ever to have called me stupid and an idiot? Wanna know why? Because you haven’t met me. I am smarter than you’ll EVER be. Especially in math. I have a 4.0. Actually, it’s gonna be even more than that next year because of all the honors classes I’m taking. And you? Yeah, didn’t think so. And if you’re gonna be going to the same school that we are going to right now (well, actually school ended- lol) next year, then it’s going to be a VERY interesting experience for you. Warning: Don’t mess with me. I can make you go crying, wanting your mommy if I wanted to. OR, I can be one of the nicest people you’re gonna meet. Take your pick. So far, I think we both know which way this is heading…
Anyways, I AM reading your posts. I just restated that Dance was strenuous, even though it is an art. So you can get the feel that just because it’s also considered an art, it isn’t as easy as it looks. It is a sport, and if after reading this definition you still don’t agree, then you seriously need help. “An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.” What part of Dance doesn’t fall into this category? Hmmm? Give me a good explanation and then maybe I will begin to see your side on this. But for the mean time, maybe you should read my posts more carefully. It’s not the other way around.
And dude, I never said that level of mathematics was difficult. In fact, to me, math isn’t difficult at all. You were just pissing me off with your stupidity, so I wondered if you could comprehend even that. I’m glad to know you understand at least that basic mathematical concept, though. It shows the slightest bit of hope for you…
As for the school thing, once again, you’re taking what I said, and completely turning it into something else. I didn’t mean grade grade, I meant grade as in judging me, and giving me a score. Ever seen for example, Dancing With The Stars? You know how the judges give scores? Like that, sort of. That’s what I meant.
Oh, and I’m a bit confused by what you said earlier. Mind clarifying? You said “I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WORK FOR THEM.” What does that mean? I don’t work for a Dance company… I’m confused.
Cam: I am not just screaming. Your thingy doesn’t have the option to italicise/underline/bolden words, so the only way I can emphasize something is to write it in all caps. And huh? You don’t like my replies and that’s why you’re starting to agree less and less with me? That makes absolutely NO sense… However, you also said that you still believed Dance is a sport, so I don’t know where you’re getting at here.
I have to break it to you, mathgeek, but kirbycurse is sporting a 4.0 as well, and happens to be in the same math class as you… a year younger.
Also, mathgeek, but “work for them” he meant you work HARD for your scores, etc. Not like a job, but like to exert yourself.
Also, mathgeek, I agree with the underlying cause here, “Dance is a sport”. But I disagree with some of your points, and how you choose to negotiate this.
Also, as the creator of this blog, I will semi-mediate. Mathgeek AND kirbycurse, you are both deviating from the underlying argument, and arguing about math, grades, and about reading people’s posts.. etc. etc.
In my mind, bottom line is this: Dance is a sport, because it has the 2 important elements of a sport: It requires strenuous physical activity, and it is competitive.
Let’s start back from here.
*sigh* I’m not starting back anywhere, Cam. And puh-lease. I could’ve been in geometry in 6th grade but my mom didn’t want me to be in a class with older people because she didn’t want me to get ‘influenced’ by them. That’s the reason. And you know it. Actually, practically everyone does. It doesn’t mean I don’t know how to do calculus or even higher levels of math, though. Because I can. In fact, I work at Kumon during the summer, as a tutor. I help kids much older than me with their math.
And Kirbycurse, this really is getting kinda old. Cam’s right. How about we just agree that you believe what you wanna believe, and me and everyone else who commented on this post can believe what we wanna believe? Okay? Yeesh, glad that’s over. I’m off to bed… *yawn*
How the hell did we get on the subject of math? And I agree that this isn’t going anywhere. We’re never going to convince him, and he’s not going to convince us, so we should just stop making each other mad.
And just to clear things up Kirbycurse, I don’t think you’re an idiot in general. Just on this particular subject. lol
Lol!! Yup, bandgeek you’re totally right. Obviously we’re all stubborn when it comes to this topic. XD
And kirbycurse, bandgeek’s right about the name calling, too. I don’t think you’re an idiot in general (mostly because I don’t even know who you are). Just when it comes to this subject… :D Lol!!
Well, too late for that, mathgeek. You already called him a complete idiot like 10 times, in addition to saying ” I’m smarter than you’ll ever be”.
But yeah. Basically, dance is a sport.
Truth is, you’re both smart, you just have VERY different points of view. And I know I’ve called you names too, so sorry if I offended you. We are all being REALLY stubborn… (and Cam, don’t even argue about how I don’t know kirbycurse to say he’s smart or stubborn or whatever else I said because I DO know him. So there!)
I wasn’t going to.
Okay because you tend to do that
Mah bad.
Geez, Cam. Thanks for making it worse. All I did was say an apology for acting that way. Yeesh. I think I KNOW I called him an idiot several. And that’s why I’m apologizing. Because seriously, we’re all being stubborn when it comes to this topic, and I’m sick of arguing because it’s getting us nowhere. Got it?
Ooops. I forgot to type in ‘times’ after ‘several’ in my 5th sentence. Lol!!
You called me an idiot way more than several times.
“I still think you’re a narrow-minded idiot who won’t listen to other people’s opinions”
“your moronic brain”
“you’re a narrow-minded idiot”
And that’s just a few. I’m not tired of arguing yet. If I may show an image that conveys my state of mind: http://xkcd.com/386/
In this case, you happen to be wrong. VERY much so about me, and not as much so on the whole sport idea. However, I am physically tired, and am going to sleep.
Kirbycurse, she apologized, get over it.
We’re being too stubborn, and we’re leaving this topic to rest.
